- Why is DDR5 more expensive than DDR4 used to be?
- DDR5 competes for the same advanced DRAM nodes as HBM. Because HBM burns far more wafer area per shipped bit, suppliers allocating capacity to AI customers structurally shrink DDR5 bit supply, and pricing is set by whoever bids hardest — usually hyperscalers.
- Is DDR5 RDIMM pricing different from desktop DDR5?
- Yes. Server RDIMMs carry registering clock drivers, ECC dies and qualification costs, and they are sold on quarterly contracts to a handful of buyers. Desktop kits are retail-priced and absorb spot moves later but more violently.
