- Why are RAM prices so high right now?
- One structural cause: HBM. High Bandwidth Memory for AI accelerators consumes roughly three times the wafer area per shipped bit versus commodity DDR5, so every wafer a DRAM maker converts to HBM removes several times more mainstream bits from the market. Effective industry bit supply is shrinking even as wafer starts grow, and mainstream DDR5, DDR4 and retail kit prices absorb the difference.
- Why is DDR4 more expensive than it was?
- Suppliers are retiring legacy DDR4 nodes to free capacity for DDR5 and HBM, while networking, industrial, automotive and older server platforms still need DDR4. Shrinking supply against steady demand is why DDR4 has moved hardest on a percentage basis.
- Is this a shortage or price gouging?
- It is an allocation problem, not a margin decision. DRAM makers sell HBM on multi-quarter allocation contracts to accelerator vendors at far higher revenue per wafer than commodity DRAM, so the rational move is to shift capacity. Consumers are bidding for the residual against hyperscaler purchase orders.
- Can new fabs fix this?
- Eventually, not quickly. A greenfield DRAM fab takes roughly seven to nine quarters from tool-in to meaningful bit output, and much of the capacity being built is already earmarked for HBM rather than commodity DRAM.
